My Personal Testimonial
The summer of 2012, I moved back to New York after living for 2 years on a farm in El Salvador. I was eating locally grown food and living a free life doing the work of my dreams. I had no set work hours, but every minute of the day I spent working- investing in people's lives, but more so my own.
Then, our Peace Corps group faced early termination, due to the safety conditions of our country, and I was uprooted from the place that I had come to love suddenly and sadly. I had to explain to faces that did not understand, that I was leaving. I had to leave some work unfinished and say goodbye to family, friends and a stray dog that had come to love me. Upon leaving, I faced some unfortunate security incidents, and landed back in New York with anxiety, no job, no money, and little independence. I did not understand the plethora of unnecessary products in the grocery store and I missed the simplicity of life. I missed living life- instead of searching for it.
In the beginning, I felt a disconnect with my family and friends- my stories of hiking waterfalls and using out-houses were hard to relate to and outlandish. I was lost and for awhile getting out of bed in the morning was sometimes the greatest success of my day. I am not exaggerating. I did not know what it really meant to be proud of myself until today.
I knew I had to do something. I was not happy with how I was living my days and I felt selfish for not appreciating all that I had been given... and I remembered how many people used to believe in me.
So, I began to make small changes. Little by little I began doing things that made me happy... and then everything started to grow. When I found the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, my life took off and I found myself on a road that seems to have been paved for me. Even when some grass or brush starts to grow before me, and somedays it is thicker than others, I am now able to hack my way through.
I learned how to take control of my life.
And it started with my health.
I learned something in Peace Corps that I will never forget. Life does not get any easier. Everyone has their struggles and there will always be challenges placed before you. That is the part that you cannot control. What you can do, is change the way you see.
And that is where the fun comes in.
I stand today happy, healthy and inspired. I love the relationship I have with food, with my family, with my work and with the planet. I look forward to what each day brings, to everything that I learn in each waking moment and all the people I meet along the way. Life has not gotten easier...but that doesn't say much. Horse-back riding is hard, skydiving is scary and surfing has so many dangers- but that is what makes it all worthwhile right? The biggest risks reap the greatest rewards.
Your joyful life, your freedom, your power, your happiness- it all comes from your attitude and relationship with the world; with yourself; and with everything and everyone with whom you interact.
I love this life.
